Spring ELA Fun! 6 Ideas to Embrace the Spring Vibes

6 fresh ideas to embrace spring ELA fun.

(Now with movement + fresh-air energy built in)

Spring energy is REAL in middle school. Instead of trying to contain it, these activities lean into movement, collaboration, and the outdoors—while still hitting real ELA standards.

1 | Paired Passage Scavenger Race

Turn paired passages into a low-stakes outdoor race.

How it works:

Begin by posting paired passage excerpts or questions around an outdoor area (fence, sidewalk, playground equipment). You can put each paragraph in a different location, or post the whole text in one place.

Students work in teams to locate the text, read it, and answer questions on a recording sheet The first team done correctly wins (accuracy > speed)

You can choose a variety of paired passages for this activity, or you can choose one set for everyone to do. The nice thing is that you’ve got options!

2 | Spring Fun with an Escape Room Relay

Instead of completing a digital escape room all at once, turn it into a relay-style challenge.

Try this:

  • Set up stations outdoors
  • Each station = one escape room challenge (printed or on devices)
  • Teams send one runner at a time
  • Correct answer = tag the next teammate

This activity is perfect for:

  • Figurative language review
  • Reading comprehension skills
  • Test prep that doesn’t feel like test prep

This is especially fun with spring-themed escape rooms and works well for classes with lots of energy.

3 | Nature-Based Figurative Language Creation

This spring ELA fun activity is where creativity really shines.

Outside challenge:

  • Students collect safe outdoor items (leaves, rocks, sticks, flowers)
  • They create:
    • A visual metaphor
    • A simile or symbol
    • A mini “scene” representing an abstract idea

Once they find their items, they will take photos and practice writing part of an exposition for a short story. The exposition will focus on the setting of the story. They can place the story anywhere, but the items they collect and the photographs they take must make their way into the story.

This activity gives students a chance to practice descriptive writing with the purpose of creating a visual image in the reader’s mind.

4 | Walk & Talk Discussion for Spring Fun

Upgrade outdoor discussions with movement built in with this spring ELA fun spin on a classroom classic.

How it works:

  • Give students a piece of reading material. The students can read the material first or they can read it as they walk.
  • Set a walking path
  • Students walk and discuss the reading with the goal of creating a claim with evidence to support it.
  • When time is up, students will gather and present their claims to the group.

This works beautifully with:

  • Paired passages
  • Short informational texts
  • Spring review days

5 | Spring Review Races

Turn test prep and skill review into friendly competition.

Here are some ideas for different review races you could try.

  • Grammar sprint (one question per cone)
  • Figurative language relay
  • Text structure matching race

Students must:

  1. Run to a station
  2. Solve the task
  3. Bring proof back to the group

Use this alongside resources like:

It’s structured chaos, but in the best way.

6 | Outdoor Choice-Based Creation Day

End the week with student choice + movement.

Set up outdoor stations like:

  • Write a spring-inspired scene
  • Create a visual representation of a text
  • Rewrite a passage from a different point of view
  • Design a figurative language poster using nature themes
  • Create a playground poem

You can assign students a station for the day, or you can have students rotate.

Final Thought

Spring doesn’t mean lowering expectations, but it may mean changing delivery, and this time of the year is one of the best times to get outside and give everyone some fresh air time.

With movement-based paired passages, outdoor races, escape room relays, and nature-inspired creation, spring ELA can be productive and joyful.
