Refresh your curriculum map mid-year to make sure you are staying on pace, teaching what your students need, and have a solid plan for the rest of the year!
It’s that time again…new year, maybe a new semester, a fresh start.
The mid-year mark is the perfect time to take a step back, evaluate how things are going, and make small (or big!) adjustments to your ELA curriculum map.
Even if you’re following a district pacing guide, you can still pause to reflect and make strategic tweaks to ensure your students are on track for mastery by the end of the year.
Let’s walk through how to refresh your curriculum map for Semester 2 without overhauling your entire plan.

4 Steps to Refresh Your Curriculum Map Mid-Year
Step 1 | Reflect on the First Half of the Year
Before looking forward, take time to look back.
Ask yourself a few honest questions:
- Which standards have I covered thoroughly?
- Which ones need revisiting or more depth?
- Were there any units or lessons that didn’t quite land?
- What surprised me about student progress (or lack thereof)?
You can pull data from formative and summative assessments, writing samples, or even informal reflections to identify where your students are strongest and where the gaps are starting to show.
If you’ve never used one, our Standards Coverage Checklists are a great visual way to track what’s been taught and what still needs attention.

Step 2 | Re-Prioritize Key Standards
Once you’ve identified what’s been taught, it’s time to reprioritize. Not all standards need equal time.
At this stage, focus on the ones that:
- Spiral throughout the year (like citing evidence or analyzing text structure)
- Are foundational to others (like determining theme before comparing texts)
- Students still need more time to master
This is a great moment to pull out your grade-level standard breakdowns and highlight which ones should take center stage this semester.
Step 3 | Simplify with Standards-Based Units
Now that you’ve identified which standards need attention, simplify your planning with ready-to-use resources.
Our Standards-Based Units are designed to make mid-year planning seamless. Each one includes:
- Lesson plans and activities that are directly aligned to one specific standard
- Assessments that measure mastery (not just completion)
- Visuals, posters, and printables to reinforce skills
You can pick up exactly where you left off in Semester 1, or you can target the areas where your students need a little more practice.
Here’s where to start:
- 6th Grade Standards-Based Units for Middle School ELA
- 7th Grade Standards-Based Units for Middle School ELA
- 8th Grade Standards-Based Units for Middle School ELA

By using standard-specific units, you’ll ensure that no skill falls through the cracks, and you can adjust your pacing without spending hours building lessons from scratch.
Step 4 | Build in Review & Flex Weeks
Semester 2 often moves fast, especially as testing season approaches. Instead of filling every week to the brim, schedule “flex weeks” for reteaching, review, and enrichment.
Use these as opportunities to:
- Review the standards students struggled with
- Incorporate fun, standards-aligned activities like Digital Escape Rooms or Paired Passage Challenges
- Allow time for project-based learning or creative writing
These breaks will help your students stay engaged while still reinforcing key concepts.
Final Thoughts
Refreshing your curriculum map doesn’t mean starting over. It means adjusting with purpose.
By reflecting on what worked, revisiting key standards, and simplifying your planning with standards-based resources, you’ll set yourself (and your students) up for a strong second semester.
Small, intentional changes can have a huge impact.
Take an hour this week to look over your pacing guide and decide where your time and energy will make the biggest difference.
You’ve got this, and we’ve got you covered every step of the way!
