Valentine’s Day is among us, and I have some great ideas to help you enjoy the holiday with your students while still assessing the standards. It is always fun to have activities in place to enjoy holidays, but we also want to make sure we are following our pacing guides and using standards-driven activities.
With these 4 Standards-Driven ELA Valentine’s Day Activities, your students will have some fun while remaining engaged with the curriculum.
- Valentine’s Day READING COMPREHENSION Digital Escape Room
This activity can be completed in a traditional school setting or virtually. It’s perfect for any type of classroom environment! You can also choose to have students compete in groups or independently. There are so many options!
There are a total of 5 activities in this Escape Room with 3 reading activities and 2 puzzles. The students will work on chronological order, plot structure, and reading comprehension.
- Valentine’s Day FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Digital Escape Room
This activity can be completed in a traditional school setting or virtually. It is perfect for any type of classroom environment. You can choose to have students compete in groups or independently. The options for use are endless!
There are a total of 5 activities in this Escape Room with 3 figurative language activities and 2 puzzles. Students will find hidden codes in the rooms. Once they enter the codes in the form, they get to the next activity. If their answers are wrong, they will not be able to move ahead. - Valentine’s Day FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Color-by-Number Activity
This print-and-go activity is perfect for figurative language review with the students. It will have students decide which figurative language is being used with each sentence. Once students finish labeling the figurative language, they will then get to color the picture based on their answers.
There are a total of 60 sentences for students to identify. It also includes a notes page for the students to have. This activity set makes a perfect classroom activity. It can also be used as a task for your early finishers.

- Valentine’s Day PARTS OF SPEECH Sort Activity
This Google Classroom or Interactive Board activity is a great and interactive way to get that practice in. The students simply read the words and drag them to the igloo with the correct part of speech on it.
This activity is READY TO GO! You literally click on the link, create a copy, and then add it to Google Classroom. You can also put it up on the board for the class to do together. So many fun options!
